Resection of frenulum

1. What is a frenulum?

Frenulums are fibrous formations in the oral cavity, better known as "fringes". Their function is to limit excessive movement. They represent completely normal anatomical structures that every person has. However, sometimes they can be more pronounced, which leads to certain consequences.

If there is a gap between the teeth, or a gap between the upper central incisors, the most common cause is the existence of a strong labial frenulum. You must have had the opportunity to meet people who have a visible gap between their teeth. And while such phenomena may be sympathetic (especially in children), they should still be taken seriously. Although a pronounced frenulum does not necessarily and directly lead to serious consequences, it can still have a certain type of adverse effect on both the aesthetic and functional aspects.

The frenulums are located in several places in the oral cavity. Depending on their position in the oral cavity, there are two labials (located under both lips, upper and lower), four buccal (located on the sides of the oral cavity) and one lingual frenulum (located below the tongue). Sometimes their attachment can be positioned very close to the tooth ridge, which can cause certain difficulties - aesthetic and functional. Very often, the labial frenulum between the central incisors in the upper jaw is the cause of spaced teeth or diastema. Apart from the aesthetic consequence, this phenomenon can also have an unpleasant consequence in the form of recession (withdrawal) of the gums, which as its final stage can lead to periodontopathy.

The sublingual frenulum restricts the movement of the tongue, which makes it difficult to pronounce voices, breastfeed, and has an impact on the position of the teeth. At a later age, the gums may withdraw from the lingual side of the tooth - the side of the tooth facing the tongue, which in turn can lead to periodontopathy.

In the elderly, pronounced frenulums very often interfere with the wearing of mobile prostheses. Therefore, prosthetic preparation often includes frenectomy

2. What is a frenectomy?

Frenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the frenulum that connects the upper or lower lip to the gums, as well as the frenulum that connects the tongue to the floor of the oral cavity. There are two methods for removing the frenulum, ie. frenectomies: surgical method and laser frenectomy.

3. What are the reasons for frenectomy?

If there is such a problem, it is necessary to do an intervention at an early age due to the proper development of the oral cavity and proper speech.

4. How long does a frenectomy take and is the procedure painful?

Dental Plaza dental office will solve this problem very quickly. It is a routine surgery that is painless and lasts only 15 minutes.

5. How is a frenectomy performed?

It is performed under local anesthesia and the surgery takes short time. This is a routine procedure, so there is no reason for any fear.

The surgical method with a scalpel after removal of the frenulum requires additional suturing. Due to that, it is much more traumatic as an intervention than the laser method, but it is still used to a considerable extent today. The sutures are removed after seven days. As long as the sutures are present, the patient may feel discomfort due to tightening. Due to the sutures, patients often avoid the area where the suturing was performed when brushing their teeth, which can additionally cause the accumulation of plaque on them and slow down the healing process.

Modern dentistry involves the use of lasers, which has led to an alternative method of performing a frenectomy, which solves most of the problems that occur when performing a surgical method.

Laser frenectomy is a safe method for removing the frenulum and we give it a great advantage when choosing a method for frenectomy. After laser removal of the frenulum, wound healing is facilitated by the fact that there are no sutures. The intervention itself is performed with a local anesthetic, so it is completely painless for patients. The laser provides precise cutting with instant hemostasis (blood clotting) which is why bleeding is minimal. It also reduces the risk of developing fibrous tissue after healing. Given the ability of the laser to stimulate the healing process, in the phase after the procedure, it is possible to stimulate the tissue with a laser for the next few days in order to achieve complete healing faster.

6. Can complications occur after a frenectomy?

The intervention cannot cause any serious complications. Dental Plaza dental practice guarantees the quality of all its services.
